Now more than ever it is evident that we must as a nation pursue clean energy solutions, posthaste. The cost of fueling our lives and pursuits has become more costly than ever and we believe the price is too high.

  • Many of the largest oil producing countries are also known for their oppression of Christians and women and support of anti-American violence. Our dependence on oil directly funds these petrol-dictatorships and thereby threatens our national security and supports injustice.”
  • In our effort to secure more oil from our own land and waters, we have put people and our natural resources at great risk, as we are forced to drill in deep waters well off our coasts or find alternatives with other human and environmental risks closer to our shores. The Gulf oil spill will remain a constant reminder of the price we pay for our reliance on fossil fuels and should prompt a dramatic increase in our development of renewable energy.
  • Coal has been an energy and economic mainstay for decades, but the burning of coal pollutes our air and water and emits high levels of CO2; the mining of coal continues to endanger the lives of our neighbors, either through the dangers of deep underground mines or the devastation of landscapes and waters through mountaintop removal mining.

As Russell Kirk wrote in viewing environmental problems of his day that are eerily reflective of recent catastrophes: “The modern spectacle of vanished forests and eroded lands, wasted petroleum, and ruthless mining ... is evidence of what an age without veneration does to itself and its successors.”

We support policies that enable energy efficiency and the rapid expansion of alternative energy sources such assolar, wind, geothermal, sustainable biomass, and low-impact hydroelectric —to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
